Yes, Christmas is a good time for whale watching in Kaikōura. Late December and early January are midsummer in New Zealand, sperm whales feed off Kaikōura all year, and summer is when orca turn up most often. You also get the longest days of the year. The two catches are the crowds and Christmas Day itself: Whale Watch Kaikōura sails every day of the year except 25 December. Book early, and plan your whale trip for another day.
- It's summer, not winter. Daytime highs are about 19–20°C, with roughly 15 hours of daylight around Christmas.
- Whale Watch is closed on 25 December and runs every other day, with up to four sailings a day from November to March. Ocean Cabin tickets cost NZ$185 per adult from 1 October 2026.
- Book weeks ahead. New Zealand school holidays start on 19 December 2026, and dolphin swims, rental cars and accommodation fill up first.
- Keep a Plan B day. If your 24 December sailing is cancelled, the next chance is 26 December.
Christmas Is Summer in Kaikōura
If you're coming from Europe or North America, it's natural to search for "Kaikōura whale watching in winter" when you mean December. New Zealand's seasons run the other way. Christmas here is a summer holiday of beach barbecues and long, light evenings, and Kaikōura's winter is June to August, when humpbacks migrate past. That season has its own guide, Kaikōura whale watching in winter, and our season-by-season calendar shows how the whole year fits together.

What You'll See in December and January
Every season brings something different, and midsummer is the best time for wildlife close to shore.
| Species | Summer status | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sperm whale (parāoa) | Year-round resident | The main attraction. Whale Watch usually sees one or two per tour |
| Orca | Most frequent in the warmer months | Whale Watch says they often visit "especially during our summer months". Never guaranteed |
| Dusky dolphin | Year-round, close to shore in summer | Large pods south of the peninsula in the mornings; a rest period runs 11:30am–1:30pm |
| NZ fur seal (kekeno) | Year-round; breeding season | DOC gives the breeding season as mid-November to mid-January, so Christmas is newborn-pup time |
| Albatross (several species) | Year-round | Wandering and royal albatross are possible on boat tours |
| Hutton's shearwater | Breeding season (August to March) | The Hutton's Shearwater Charitable Trust calls it the only seabird in the world that breeds in an alpine environment. Its two remaining colonies sit 1,200–1,800 m up in the Seaward Kaikōura Range, with more than 100,000 breeding pairs |
| Pilot, blue and fin whales | Occasional | Listed by Whale Watch as seasonal possibilities; treat them as a bonus |
| Humpback whale | Mostly a winter species | Unlikely at Christmas; see our winter humpback guide |
Sperm whales: the reliable part
Whale Watch's FAQ says it has over a 90% success rate in finding whales, so you will very probably see one, and if you don't, you get back 80% of your fare. Under New Zealand regulations, orca and pilot whales count as whales for this guarantee. Dolphins and seals don't.
Orca: summer gives you the best chance
Whale Watch says orca often visit Kaikōura in summer, and Dolphin Encounter describes them passing through all year, mostly from September to April. December to March is the usual window, but nobody can schedule a sighting. Book for the sperm whales and treat an orca as a lucky extra.
Dusky dolphins and the midday rest period
From October to May, dusky dolphins come close to shore early each morning on the south side of the Kaikōura Peninsula. From November to March, the Department of Conservation sets a compulsory rest period from 11:30am to 1:30pm, when no boat may view dusky dolphins. That's why dolphin trips leave early, and why a midday whale tour won't stop for the duskies.
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
Summer in Kaikōura is the season for dusky dolphins close to shore, newborn fur seal pups and long evenings on the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway. A whale watching flight or a helicopter tour with a mountain landing on the Seaward Kaikōura Range is a good back-up when the sea is rough, a wildlife kayak tour gets you close to the seal colony, and from Christchurch you can do the whole coast on a Kaikōura day tour that includes the whale watch. Browse current options and availability below:
Fur Seal Pups at Christmas
New Zealand fur seal pups are born between mid-November and mid-January, according to the Department of Conservation. At Ōhau Point, a study in Aquatic Conservation recorded the first newborns on 8 December in 2021–22 and 9 December in 2022–23, so Christmas is a good time to see very young pups. The roadside Ōhau Point lookout is about 25 km north of town on SH1. The colony below it produced an estimated 2,401 pups in 2023 (Aquatic Conservation) and an estimated 3,137 in 2024/25 (Ecology and Evolution), though numbers vary from year to year.
The shoreline there is a sanctuary and closed to the public, so watch from the platform. Closer to town, seals often lie around the peninsula car park. Keep at least 20 metres away and never get between a seal and the sea. Our seal watching guide covers the other viewing spots.

Whale Watch Kaikōura Over the Holidays: The Fine Print
- Departure times (November–March): 7:45am, 10:30am, 1:15pm and 4:00pm. Extra sailings may be added when demand is high.
- Check-in versus departure: Whale Watch's current booking times are departure times. Arrive 30 minutes early; check-in closes strictly 5 minutes before departure, and a missed sailing can mean losing your fare. Some resellers and older listings still show the old check-in times (7:15am, 10:00am, 12:45pm, 3:30pm), so go by your confirmation email.
- Prices (1 October 2026 – 30 September 2027): the Ocean Cabin costs NZ$185 per adult and NZ$60 per child aged 3–15. The 12-seat VIP Captain's Cabin costs NZ$265 and includes a food pack. The whale watching cruise is from $99 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.6 from 3,876 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
- Allow 3 hours 15 minutes in total, including the bus to South Bay. You'll be on the water for just over two hours.
- Cancelling a direct booking: cancel less than 48 hours before check-in and you get no refund. Changing a booking is free.
- Weather cancellations: if Whale Watch cancels, you get a full refund. You won't be moved to the next sailing automatically, so ask about rebooking straight away, although that sailing may already be full. Our cancellations and refunds guide has the full rules.
- No under-3s on board. No alcohol is allowed, and no food is sold outside the VIP cabin.
How Far Ahead to Book for Christmas and New Year
Most Kiwi families travel between 19 December and late January, so everything on the coast gets busy at once.
- Whale Watch: book once your dates are fixed, ideally a month or more ahead. That matters most if you want the 7:45am sailing, which tends to have calmer seas, or the VIP cabin. Whale Watch itself says advance booking is strongly advised.
- Dolphin swim: book this first. Dolphin Encounter, which you book directly with the operator, says the swim often sells out in summer. Swimming costs from NZ$265 per adult and NZ$240 per child aged 8–14, and watching costs NZ$150 per adult and NZ$95 per child.
- Whale flights and helicopters: the small aircraft fill quickly on calm days. Book a few weeks ahead and keep a second day free.
- Accommodation: book as soon as you can. Kaikōura is small, and beachfront motels and holiday parks fill for the whole school-holiday period.
- Rental cars and campervans: book months ahead for December pick-ups in Christchurch or Picton.
- Coastal Pacific train: the train runs daily from September 2026 to April 2027 (the schedule is still to be confirmed), but not on Christmas Day. Book seats as early as you can.
What to Do on Christmas Day (25 December)
Christmas Day is one of New Zealand's few restricted trading days. Supermarkets and bottle stores must close by law. Dairies (corner stores), petrol stations and pharmacies may open, and so may cafés and restaurants, though many choose to shut. Buy your picnic food on the 24th.
Good options for 25 December:
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: clifftop and shoreline trails starting near the seal-dotted car park. Go early or late to avoid the heat and the crowds.
- Ōhau Point seal colony: watch newborn pups from the lookout.
- A beach picnic along the Esplanade or at South Bay, with the mountains behind you.
- Scenic flights, if the operator is flying. A third-party listing says Wings Over Whales closes on Christmas Day, and we found nothing confirmed for Kaikōura Helicopters, so check before you plan around one.
- Christmas lunch out: book a restaurant weeks ahead, and expect a set menu and a surcharge.
Sample 3-Day Itinerary Spanning Christmas
Day 1: 24 December (Christmas Eve)
- Take the 7:00am Coastal Pacific from Christchurch, which reaches Kaikōura mid-morning, or drive up SH1.
- Book the 1:15pm whale watch in the Ocean Cabin.
- Shop for Christmas food before the supermarket closes.
- Have an early dinner, then catch the sunset after 9pm.
Day 2: 25 December (Christmas Day)
- Walk the Peninsula Walkway at sunrise, around 5:48am, then have a picnic brunch.
- Drive out to the Ōhau Point lookout to see the seal pups.
- Spend the afternoon on the beach and have Christmas dinner at your accommodation.
Day 3: 26 December (Boxing Day)
- Take the 5:30am or 8:30am dolphin swim or watch.
- Fit in a late-morning whale flight before you drive on.
- If you're heading north, set off early, because NZTA has forecast Boxing Day queues on SH1 in previous years.
Weather back-up: because Whale Watch is closed on Christmas Day, a cancelled sailing on the 24th can't move to the 25th. Hold a provisional seat for 26 December, or keep a flight as Plan B, since aircraft sometimes fly when the sea is too rough. Both whale flight operators give a refund or reschedule if they can't fly. If you're travelling north to south instead, Whale Watch on New Year's Day or 2 January works just as well.
Weather, Daylight and Sea Conditions
NIWA's 1991–2020 averages put Kaikōura's mean daily high at 19.1°C in December and 20.3°C in January, with lows of about 12–13°C. That's mild rather than hot, and it can feel cold on deck once a southerly wind arrives. Around the solstice you get roughly 15¼ hours of daylight. The sun is strong: UV in New Zealand's summer is high even on cool, hazy days, so wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses on the boat.
Summer doesn't guarantee flat water. Whale Watch tells every tour there's a "moderate" chance of seasickness and raises it to "high" on rough days, and the decision to sail is made about 15 minutes before check-in. Cancellations are less common than in winter but still happen, especially on the afternoon sailings and when a southerly blows through. Book a morning sailing, take seasickness tablets early, and read our motion sickness guide and packing guide.

NZ$ figures are the operators' own published prices; $ figures are GetYourGuide's US-dollar starting prices for the matching listing. Kaikōura Helicopters' fares differ between its booking page and its parent company's site, and its prices usually rise each 1 September.
Helicopters charge one fare for everyone aged 3 and over, infants fly free on a lap, and minimum passenger numbers apply. For a cheaper flight, Air Kaikoura's 30-minute whale watching flight is from $124 and rated 4.6 from 938 reviews, the most-reviewed flight on GetYourGuide; it has no hotel pickup, so pick the Wings Over Whales flight if you have no car. On the helicopter side, South Pacific Helicopters' 45-minute flight with a mountain landing is from $481, rated 5.0 from 8 reviews. Our price guide compares every boat, flight and helicopter fare, and our boat vs plane vs helicopter comparison covers what each is like.
Getting There Over the Holidays
- SH1 from Christchurch takes about 2.5 hours. NZTA's 2025–26 holiday forecast had SH1 northbound through North Canterbury and Kaikōura busy from late morning into the afternoon on Boxing Day. Leave early and check NZTA's journey planner for roadworks; weather damage caused delays south of town in 2026.
- SH1 from Picton is also busy around ferry arrival times. Interislander and Bluebridge crossings are at their busiest over Christmas and New Year, so book vehicle space early.
- Coastal Pacific train: northbound, it leaves Christchurch at 7:00am and reaches Kaikōura at about 9:50am. Southbound, it leaves Kaikōura in the late afternoon and gets back to Christchurch around 7:30pm, which works for a long day trip with a midday sailing. There's no service on Christmas Day.
- Day tours from Christchurch: Whale Watch lists a Canterbury Leisure Tours day trip at NZ$320, and small-group flight tours cost more. See our day trip guide. On GetYourGuide, the Kaikōura day tour with whale watching is from $215 with lunch and hotel pickup, rated 4.6 from 326 reviews. If dolphins matter more than whales, the Christchurch day tour with a dolphin encounter is from $220, but it has only 15 reviews (rated 4.3), so read the recent ones first.
- Public-holiday surcharges: on 25, 26 and 28 December and on 1, 2 and 4 January, many cafés and restaurants add a surcharge (15% is common, but it varies). It's legal and usually printed on the menu.
New Year's Eve in Kaikōura
Don't expect city fireworks. New Year's Eve in Kaikōura is low-key and centres on the pubs and restaurants. At the time of writing we couldn't confirm any council-run 2026 New Year's Eve event or a published fireworks display, so check Destination Kaikōura's calendar closer to the date. Licensed premises can currently serve until 2am, but Kaikōura District Council is reviewing its local alcohol policy in 2026 and hours could change. The council also has a Control of Alcohol in Public Places bylaw, so check its website before you drink on the beach or in town.
Tips for Families on Holiday
- Children must be at least 3 to go on the boat, and the child Ocean Cabin fare is NZ$60. Our guide to Kaikōura whale watching with kids has the age-by-age options.
- The 7:45am sailing suits early-waking kids and often has calmer water.
- The dolphin swim is for ages 8 and up, though younger children can come along as watchers.
- Whale Watch's FAQ points parents to an independent local childcare service.
